Resetting or Stopping a Seat Belt Alarm

If your seat belt alarm won’t stop due to a malfunction, you can reset it through the vehicle’s built-in sequence or use a seat belt stopper. Keep in mind: driving without a seat belt is illegal in most states, and for your own safety, you should always buckle up.

Things to Know Before You Start

  • Many cars allow you to reset the seat belt alarm using a simple ignition and buckle sequence.

  • If you don’t want to wear a seat belt, a seat belt clip/stopper can silence the alarm by plugging into the buckle.

  • If you do plan on wearing your seat belt but need more room, use a seat belt extender instead.

  • This sequence will disable a seat belt alarm in most vehicles, but not all of them. If you try these steps and they don’t work, check your user manual for specific instructions.
